CHRIS ROBINSON ON THE DEMISE OF THE LEAKING, DRAUGHTY HOE THEATRE

THE opening of the Theatre Royal in 1982 inevitably heralded the end of Plymouth City Council's 20-year-old, single storey, badly raked entertainment space just off the southern tip of Armada Way the Hoe Theatre.
The writing had been on the wall for this draughty structure, prone to leaking when it rained, as soon as the Council had voted, by a narrow margin, to invite architect Peter Moro to make his vision a reality.
That still however left the Hoe Theatre with time to fill and this it did in the early eighties with an impressive run of quality shows, one of the best, oddly enough, being one of the last.
