Watchdog urges social media firms to limit online 'pile-ons'

Social media platforms are being urged by the communications watchdog to limit internet pile-ons under new guidelines aimed at protecting women and girls online.
The guidance from Ofcom seeking to combat misogynistic abuse, coercive control and “revenge porn” comes into force today and includes recommendations to prevent women being harassed online.
The measures suggest tech companies enforce limits on the number of responses to posts in a move Ofcom hopes will reduce pile-ons, where users are deluged with abusive replies to their posts.
Other measures include using a database of images to protect women and girls from the sharing of intimate images without the subject’s consent - often referred to as revenge porn.
