Watchdog bans cryptocurrency firm's 'irresponsible' adverts

January 28, 2026

The Guardian

A cryptocurrency exchange advised by George Osborne has been banned from showing adverts that suggested its services could be a solution to the cost of living crisis.

- Tom Knowles

Coinbase, which appointed the Tory former chancellor to chair its global advisory council last year, was told by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) that its campaign was “irresponsible” and “trivialised the risks of cryptocurrency”.

The adverts included a sarcastic two-minute video of people singing “Everything is just fine, everything is grand” even as their home and neighbourhood fall into a state of chaos and supermarket prices soar.
