Twenty people missing after Indonesian protests, says rights group
September 03, 2025
|The Guardian
At least 20 people are missing after violent protests that have gripped cities across Indonesia over the past week, a human rights group has said.
Mass protests first erupted on 25 August, prompted by anger over perks and benefits given to lawmakers, including a controversial housing allowance. Public fury escalated when Affan Kurniawan, 21, a motorcycle taxi driver, was killed after he was hit by a police vehicle at a protest in the capital, Jakarta.
At least six people have been killed since the protests began, while 20 remain missing, according to a statement released by the Commission for the Disappeared and Victims of Violence (KontraS).
The organisation said verified reports submitted by members of the public indicated "20 missing persons remain unfound" in cities including Bandung, Depok and Jakarta.
