'People got embarrassed' Ethiopians and Eritreans on the legacy of Band Aid

In what he remembers as an early warning of climate crisis, Yared, 48, recalls seeing people eating grass, or starving to death with their livestock rather than break taboos on killing cows.

He also recalls the effect of Band Aid, the all-star charity single that has been reworked for 2024, and "annoyance" that a nation that has since seen rapid economic growth should be defined by its troubles.

In the UK's Habesha community - including people from Ethiopia and Eritrea, which, at the time of the 1984 famine, were one country at war - opinions are nuanced.
