Number of streets named after birds soars despite falling populations

Skylarks, lapwings and starlings are increasingly being spotted on lists of British street names, even as bird populations decline in the wild.
According to a report by the RSPB, names such as Skylark Lane and Swift Avenue are on the rise. Based on Ordnance Survey's Open Names data from 2004 to 2024, the conservation charity found road names featuring the word skylark had risen 350%, were up 156% for starling and 104% for lapwing, despite populations of each species having fallen.
Between 1970 and 2022, the UK lost 53% of its breeding skylarks, 62% of lapwings and 89% of nightingales.
