Sheffield Wednesday’s three-year stay in the Championship was ended ina cruel final twist of fate by their city rivals Sheffield United.
It takes some doing to be relegated while the snowdrops are still out but for a red hand to operate the trap door only added insult to injury.
Excluding Bury, who were expelled from League One in 2019-20 without playing a game, this is the earliest a team have been relegated in EFL history. There was little by way of sympathy from the United fans, who serenaded their visitors with chants of “Wednesday’s going down”.
United won a feisty contest despite a 49th-minute red card for Kalvin Phillips for a dangerous tackle on Svante Ingelsson, in a result that added further impetus to their long-distance promotion playoff push. Wednesday also had a player sent off in the 90th minute - Gabriel Otegbayo, for a second yellow card after pulling back Tyrese Campbell ~and had five other players booked.
It was in keeping with the temperature of the occasion that it ended in a mini-melee after Wednesday’s playerstook exception to Sydie Peck’s exuberant celebrations. Disappointment and emptiness then took over.
