Child poverty Questions over widening of free school meals scheme

The expansion of free school meals will initially benefit far fewer children in England than claimed, according to the Institute for Fiscal Studies.
New figures from the Department for Education's annual school census show that 25.7% of all pupils already receive them, up by more than one percentage point in a year and nearly double the 13.6% of 2017. The record of nearly 2.2 million children is a rise of 77,700 on January last year.
Bridget Phillipson, the education secretary, has announced expanded free school meal (FSM) eligibility from September 2026, allowing all children from households receiving universal credit benefits to receive the help. Currently those with a net earned household income of below £7,400 a year are eligible.
