BMA rejects data showing most resident doctors chose not to strike

The doctors' union has rejected NHS figures showing less than a third of resident doctors joined strike action in England last week and that 93% of operations and procedures went ahead as planned.
NHS England said it maintained care for an estimated 10,000 more patients during the latest strike compared with last year's walkout. Wes Streeting, the health secretary, said the figures showed it was time to "move past the cycle of disruption".
But the British Medical Association (BMA) rejected the figures, claiming that it was "almost impossible to know" how many doctors had joined the five-day action.
The number taking part was down by 7.5% on the previous round of walkouts, according to an early analysis. NHS England said it would publish the fuller data in due course.
Resident doctors, previously called junior doctors, are seeking a 29% pay rise. The government has refused to negotiate on pay, resulting in an acrimonious war of words.
