TOURIST REVIVAL OFFERS NEW HOPE TO KASHMIR

The previously peaceful streets of Pahalgam ring now with the happy voice of tourists and the thronged activity of local shops. Barely months since the attack that shocked this idyllic valley, a sudden recovery is in progress.

Travelers are coming back in increased numbers, attracted by Pahalgam's ageless beauty and the indomitable spirit of its people. This resurgence is not only a sign of economic recovery, but a strong indication of the lasting charm of Kashmir's crown jewel.

The turnaround has been quicker than most anticipated. Where hotels were half-empty only a few weeks ago, occupancy rates are rising steadily. Shopkeepers who feared for their survival are once again receiving customers, and pony wallahs and guides are finding their calendars full. This rebound says something about travelers’ abiding passion for Pahalgam’s stunning landscapes and the warmth of Kashmiri hospitality.

Homegrown tourism operators say they have seen a clear change over the past few weeks. "Initially there were only a handful of adventurous types," says hotelier Arif Khan, "but now we are getting families, honeymooners, even international tourists coming back." The transformation is evident everywhere - in the packed market stalls, the sold-out shikara rides along the Lidder River, and the buzz around trendy picnic spots like Betaab Valley.

The rapid response of the government to tighten security has been a major help in this turnaround. Greater police deployment, enhanced surveillance, and enhanced emergency response systems have served to restore confidence among travelers. Frequent assurances by tourism officials highlighting Pahalgam's safety have also instilled confidence among would-be visitors.
