Remembering 13 Teessiders ‘of hostile origin' killed in torpedo attack
July 02, 2025
|The Gazette
A WOODEN plaque situated in Middlesbrough Town Hall remembers 13 Teesside men originally born in Italy.
-
The men, along with 792 others, lost their lives on July 2, 1940, when the ship they were aboard was torpedoed 75 miles west of Ireland.
The Arandora was built by Cammell Laird in Birkenhead in 1927 for the Blue Star Line. In 1929, her cabin capacity was almost doubled, and tennis courts and a swimming pool were added to rebrand the renamed Arandora Star as a cruise ship to travel the world.
She was nicknamed the Wedding Cake and Chocolate Box due to her white hull adorned with a scarlet ribbon. The Royal Navy requisitioned SS Arandora Star was deployed several times to evacuate troops from Brittany.
On May 22, 1940, the British government increased the powers of Defense Regulation 18B. This resulted in thousands of people being interned without trial if identified, amongst other reasons, for being “of hostile origin”.
