TRIBUTES ARE PAID TO AN ALL-TIME AYRESOME PARK HERO OF HIS TIME
TRIBUTES have been paid after Middlesbrough legend Gordon Jones died aged 82 on Monday.
The left-back made 532 appearances for Middlesbrough between 1961 and 1973. It’s a club postwar record and places him second on the Boro’s all-time appearances behind Tim Williamson.
Known for his tough but fair tackling and crossing ability, Jones had the distinction of never being red carded throughout his whole Boro career. Despite the many games played, he only picked up two yellow cards.
He scored five goals during his 12-year spell at Middlesbrough and would play for Darlington after leaving. He was twice named Player of the Season in 1966 and 1971. He was also part of Boro’s Division Three promotion-winning side of 1967, the first season in which he captained the club.
