Cottages and flats plan for 'deteriorating' hospital site

PLANS have been submitted for 34 new homes on the site of a now redundant former hospital.

- By STUART ARNOLD Local democracy reporter

A mix of apartments and cottages are proposed for buildings associated with Guisborough General Hospital, in Northgate, in the town.

It was originally a workhouse and later during the Second World War housed injured servicemen and women before being designated as a hospital after the NHS was established in 1948.

The use of the buildings ended in 2019 with a new primary care hospital operated by the South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust being opened on the same site to the east of the old hospital three years later following a delayed £5.3m development.

The plans by Countryside Commercial Ltd submitted to Redcar and Cleveland Council envisage 16 apartments being created in the main Grade II listed hospital block, along with 10 apartments in what is known as the Ashwood building, which was latterly used by the local NHS as office space. These would each contain one, two or three bedrooms.

Eight oneor two-bedroomed cottages are also planned for the eastern wing known as the Mews.
