Virgin Island reopens with stricter environmental rules

Bohol reopened one of its most visited sandbar islands, betting that tighter environmental rules can revive tourism income without repeating past damage.

The Provincial Government of Bohol on Feb. 3 led the reopening of Puntod Island, widely known as Virgin Island, after months of closure tied to coral damage, waste problems and illegal fee collection.
Officials say the new system aims to turn the site into a model for sustainable tourism as the province balances environmental protection with local jobs.
Governor Aris Aumentado said in a statement that tourism growth must not come at the expense of natural assets that draw visitors to Bohol, the country's first UNESCO Global Geopark.
