The Key to Inner Peace

August 10, 2025

The Freeman

In the midst of life’s cacophony of chaos and demands of living, its really no wonder that our greatest wish is to have inner peace.

But, like an elusive dream, inner peace can be challenging to have — like catching a butterfly where one ends up chasing it more, the more he or she tries to catch it.

This is a reality we all have to accept and, to a certain extent, embrace. There are things and situations that are beyond our control. If we insist on controlling everything that happens in our lives, we'd end up losing.

Life can be a form of mental torture and we can be robbed of the essence of joy when we try to control every facet in our lives. As the Dalai Lama reminds: “The purpose of life is to be happy and be at peace with the world.”

It took me some time, but I have learned to surrender and let of things, situations and people whom I cannot control. It took awhile for me to learn and accept this, after parrying with life’s many challenges, but I have learned that detaching and letting go of things which are beyond my control leads to more peaceful days, as opposed to pining over what was or how things could’ve been.
