SUMMER DREAMS IN CEBU

April 27, 2025

The Freeman

Eleven-year-old Krista Ferrer stared out the classroom window, daydreaming as Teacher Jamaica talked to them about summer plans. She asked them where they were going with their family. Some classmates mentioned going to beach resorts, others talked about trips to another island.

Some of her friends mentioned visiting relatives, while others had to help their parents in the sari-sari store. But Krista had only one wish for her summer vacation: to explore the places that she considered treasures of her own hometown.

Her parents were both working, but they weren’t rich. They have been to beaches and swimming pools, but they have never been to most places in Cebu City.

Seeing wonderful places online made Krista curious, imaginative, and determined. “Oh my, these places are just in Cebu. We don’t even have to go to another town.” When she saw pictures of Cebu's landmarks in her textbooks and Teacher Jamaica’s PowerPoint slides, she felt a growing interest of wanting to see them with her own eyes.
