State vehicle fitnes fee sharply up

Owners of vehicles registered in Kerala are absorbing the impact of a sweeping fee overhaul for vehicle fitness tests put in place under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways through the amendment of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, which lowers the age threshold for higher fitness-certification fees and raises charges by up to tenfold for older vehicles.

Under the new rules, vehicles that reach 10 years of age now fall into a higher fee bracket; previously such elevated charges began at 15 years. MoRTH has rolled out a three-tier classification: vehicles aged 10-15 years, 15-20 years and older than 20 years.
