Purge of caste streets

October 12, 2025

|

The Free Press Journal

The Greater Chennai Corporation has embarked on a sweeping renaming exercise to eliminate caste-linked nomenclature from about 3,400 roads and streets before 19 November, in compliance with a directive from the Tamil Nadu government that compels all municipal bodies to purge caste identifiers from public spaces.

Under the state's mandate, local bodies, along with civic, revenue and municipal departments, must audit public roads, localities and waterbodies that include caste markers and replace them with neutral or honourific names-drawing from literary figures, flora, fauna or neutral terms. The process involves consultation with ward councillors and area sabhas before final notification in district gazettes by 24 November.
