Skipper's fifer overshadows Starc's 7/58 as visitors gain advantage
In a chaotic opening day of the Ashes, Ben Stokes (centre) won the toss and watched his team skittled for 172 before taking a five-wicket haul to give England a first-innings advantage Friday in the first cricket test.
Day 1 lived up to the pre-series hype, with pace bowlers dominating on a sunny day in front of more than 51,000 spectators at Perth Stadium. Mitchell Stare took a career-best 7-58 as Australia bundled England out by the second session. Jofra Archer took a wicket in the first over of Australia's reply to show the five-man England pace arsenal wasn't to be outdone. The home team was 123-9 at stumps, still 49 runs behind.

'Can extend SIR draft roll deadline if needed'
The Supreme Court on Wednesday said it has the power to extend the date for publication of draft electoral rolls under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) if the petitioners are able to make out a case. The observation from Chief Justice of India Surya Kant came as parties in the West Bengal matter expressed concern that the case was being posted to December 9, the same day the draft roll is scheduled to be published. “So what? If you make out a case, then we can direct them to extend the date. Can that date be a ground for the Court to say that we don't have any power now? Court can always say,” the CJI remarked.
