MPCB fines civic body
October 09, 2025
|The Free Press Journal - Mumbai
The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has imposed a fine of Rs17.1 crore on Vadgaon Nagar Panchayat for failing to construct and commission sewage treatment plants (STPs), resulting in untreated sewage being discharged directly into the Indrayani River.
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) had directed all local bodies to commission their STPs by Mar 31, 2021, warning that any defaulting authority would be fined 10 lakh per month per STP from Apr 2021 onwards. Despite repeated notices, Vadgaon Nagar Panchayat failed to comply, leading to the heavy penalty.
