Seed Cycling: A natural approach to hormonal balance

Seed cycling is a holistic, naturopathic practice that involves consuming specific types of seeds during the two main phases of the menstrual cycle to naturally support and balance the hormones estrogen and progesterone.

While scientific evidence specifically backing the practice is limited, it is widely used by complementary health practitioners and is based on the nutritional science of the seeds, which are rich in key micronutrients, fatty acids, and lignans known to interact with sex hormones. The method aims to regulate the cycle, alleviate common symptoms of PMS (premenstrual syndrome), reduce menstrual cramps, and offer support during perimenopause.

Understanding the two phases of seed cycling

The 28-day cycle is divided into two 14-day phases, each requiring a different combination of seeds to support the dominant hormones of that phase.

Phase 1: The follicular phase (Days 1–14)

This phase starts on Day 1 (the first day of menstruation) and lasts until ovulation (around Day 14). The dominant hormone during this time is Estrogen, which rises to help the uterine lining rebuild and prepare the body for ovulation. The goal of this phase is to gently support healthy estrogen levels and prevent an excessive estrogen peak.
