Ex-DGP’s assets trial begins

A long-running case against former police chief Tomin J. Thachankary has entered a crucial phase as the vigilance court in Kottayam commenced continuous day-to-day hearings, bringing into sharp focus the wider challenge of tackling disproportionate asset allegations involving senior public officials.

Thachankary appeared in court, where the first two witnesses were examined amid a procedural regimen demanding intense scrutiny; a total of 128 witnesses have been listed and 145 investigation records submitted by the probe agency. The court has been directed by the Kerala High Court to complete the trial within six months.
