A new-age cement plant redefines sustainability with low-carbon processes, renewable energy and digital innovation
-
Once seen as a major emitter, the cement industry is now undergoing a remarkable green transformation.
With a 23% drop in CO, emissions per tonne since 1990—driven by innovations and efforts like the Cement and Concrete Breakthrough from COP28—sustainability is firmly cemented into its future. India, the world’s second-largest producer, is leading by example with one of the most energy-efficient sectors globally. With a robust capacity of 553 MTPA in FY24, the Indian cement industry is charting an ambitious ‘Decarbonisation Roadmap’ to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070, reinforcing its commitment to both progress and the planet.
An excellent example of these principles in action is Shree Cement’s Nawalgarh plant in Rajasthan, commissioned in December 2023. With latest technology supplied by Danish technology leader FLSmidth, the facility demonstrates how large-scale industrial development can align with sustainability. Designed with advanced green technologies, the plant reduces reliance on coal and emphasizes energy-efficient processes in pyro-process.
Strategically located near abundant reserves of limestone the plant minimizes the environmental impact of raw material transport. Its proximity to high-demand markets in northern and western India further reduces fuel consumption for distribution, leading to lower emissions. Moreover, by supplying cement for national infrastructure projects such as Smart Cities and the Bharatmala Highway network, the plant contributes to India's development while maintaining a strong sustainability focus.
