Yamuna pact quenches thirst of Shekhawati region

The water pact between Haryana and Rajasthan will help address the severe water crisis in Rajasthan's Shekhawati region, providing drinking and irrigation water to the drought-hit districts of Jhunjhunu, Churu, and Sikar.

This was claimed by the Union Minister of State for Jal Shakti, V Somanna in a reply to an unstarred question raised in the Lok Sabha.

The Shekhawati region has long grappled with water scarcity, prompting urgent action from both state and central governments.

Under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), launched in August 2019, the government of India has been working with Rajasthan to ensure tap water connections for every rural household.

Jhunjhunu now has 51.24% of its 2,72,583 rural households connected, up from 15.74% in 2019; Churu stands at 67.36% of its 3,00,702 households; and Sikar has reached 56.86% of its 2,69,130 households.

These gains reflect the addition of 97,511, 1,75,153, and 1,24,535 tap water connections in the respective districts since the mission's inception.
