US ‘running’ Venezuela claim alarms India’s former envoys

Former Indian diplomats have strongly criticised the United States' operation in Venezuela and President Donald Trump’s subsequent remarks, warning that the action risks undermining international law, sovereignty and regional stability, even as global reactions remain cautious and divided.

Speaking to ANI, former Indian Ambassador to Venezuela Y.K. Sinha described President Donald Trump's statement that Washington would “run” Venezuela during a transition as “quite astounding”, particularly in light of the history of foreign interventions in the region. He questioned the legality of the operation that led to the detention of deposed Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro, asking whether the forcible removal and transfer of a head of state to face trial abroad could ever be considered acceptable under international law.

Sinha argued that foreign control would find little acceptance among Venezuelans, irrespective of political affiliation, warning that such actions revive memories of colonialism and gunboat diplomacy.
