THE IMPACT OF EPILEPSY ON MENTAL HEALTH

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that affects millions of people worldwide. Characterized by recurrent seizures, it can have a significant impact not only on physical health but also on mental well-being. The relationship between epilepsy and mental health is complex, as individuals with epilepsy are at a higher risk for developing various mental health conditions, and conversely, mental health issues can influence the course and management of the disorder.

THE PSYCHOLOGICAL TOLL OF EPILEPSY

One of the most profound impacts of epilepsy is the psychological burden it places on individuals. The unpredictability of seizures can cause significant anxiety, particularly when a seizure occurs in public or without warning. People with epilepsy often live in fear of a seizure happening at an inopportune time, such as while driving or during social gatherings, which can lead to social withdrawal and isolation.

Moreover, the stigma associated with epilepsy can exacerbate mental health struggles. Despite significant advances in understanding epilepsy, misconceptions about the disorder still exist. Many people associate epilepsy with intellectual disability or view individuals with seizures as "different," leading to social exclusion and discrimination. This societal stigma can have a lasting impact on self-esteem, contributing to depression and anxiety.

DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY IN EPILEPSY

Depression is one of the most common mental health conditions among people with epilepsy. The risk of developing depression is higher in individuals with epilepsy compared to the general population, with studies suggesting that nearly 30-40% of people with epilepsy experience depressive symptoms.
