STRAIT OF HORMUZ: HISTORY AND POLITICS BEHIND WORLD'S MOST STRATEGIC CHOKEPOINT

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most important waterways in the world, yet it is also among the narrowest and most vulnerable maritime passages on the planet. Situated between Iran to the north and Oman and the United Arab Emirates to the south, the strait serves as the only sea passage connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. Through this narrow stretch of water passes a massive share of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas, making it central not only to Middle Eastern politics but also to the global economy.

For centuries, the Strait of Hormuz has been far more than a geographical feature. It has been a gateway for trade, a strategic military chokepoint, and a symbol of regional power. Empires fought for control over it long before the discovery of oil transformed the Gulf into an energy powerhouse. In the modern era, every major conflict or diplomatic confrontation involving Iran, Gulf states, or Western powers inevitably raises concerns about the security of this narrow corridor.

Today, the Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most sensitive geopolitical flashpoints. Any tension in the region immediately affects oil prices, shipping routes, global markets, and diplomatic relations. Understanding its history and importance is essential to understanding modern international politics.

GEOGRAPHY OF A STRATEGIC CHOKEPOINT

The Strait of Hormuz lies at the mouth of the Persian Gulf. At its narrowest navigable point, it is only about 33 kilometres wide, while the shipping lanes used by oil tankers are even narrower. Despite its limited width, the strait handles an enormous volume of maritime traffic.
