Retail inflation rises to 3.93% in May as food prices climb

India’s retail inflation rose to 3.93 per cent in May from 3.48 per cent in April, driven by higher food prices, according to provisional data released by the National Statistics Office on Friday.
The year-on-year inflation rate, measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) with base year 2024, stood at 4.25 per cent in rural areas and 3.53 per cent in urban areas.
Food inflation also increased, with the Consumer Food Price Index rising 4.78 per cent in May compared with the same month last year. Rural food inflation stood at 4.85 per cent, while urban food inflation was recorded at 4.66 per cent.
