Raksha Bandhan: The Eternal Bond of Protection

A well-known episode in the Mahabharata tells of Lord Krishna and Draupadi. Once, Krishna injured his finger, and Draupadi immediately tore a piece of her saree and tied it around his wound. Touched by her gesture, Krishna promised to protect her always.

Rakhi, also known as Raksha Bandhan, is one of the most cherished festivals in the Hindu tradition. Celebrated on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Shravana (usually in August), Rakhi is a festival that beautifully highlights the sacred bond between a brother and a sister. Beyond its emotional warmth, Raksha Bandhan has deep religious, historical, and cultural roots in Hinduism, making it more than just a family celebration.

The term "Raksha Bandhan" is derived from two Sanskrit words: Raksha meaning protection, and Bandhan meaning bond or tie. Together, they signify a "bond of protection." On this day, sisters tie a decorative thread or amulet known as rakhi around the wrists of their brothers, praying for their well-being, prosperity, and longevity. In return, brothers promise to protect their sisters throughout their lives and often offer gifts as a token of love.

Hindu mythology offers several stories that highlight the origin and importance of Raksha Bandhan:
