Politics Begins Over Online Gaming Bill

The passage of the Online Gaming Bill in Parliament has triggered a political storm, with the Karnataka and Tamil Nadu governments set to approach the Supreme Court against the Centre.

- MANOJ JOSHI

Both state governments have termed the legislation "unconstitutional," arguing that matters related to betting, lottery, and gambling fall under the purview of the states, and that the Centre cannot enact such a law without consultation.

Currently, Karnataka is governed by the Congress under Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, while Tamil Nadu has a DMK government led by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. Both states have faced serious challenges due to online gaming—Karnataka reported 32 suicides linked to it, while Tamil Nadu too has seen multiple such cases. Both governments had already tightened restrictions on online gaming, raising the question: if the Centre is also imposing stricter regulations, why are the states opposing it?
