KNOWLEDGE, VIRTUE & POWER LEAD TO WISE ACTION
September 20, 2025
|The Daily Guardian
It is said that knowledge is power. Knowledge frees us from superstition, fears, and manipulation, enables us to understand the world, make informed decisions, and solve problems.
Knowledge also grants us influence and control. In many contexts, including politics, business, and science, those with superior knowledge often hold power over others. Most technological and societal advances have also come from the accumulation and application of knowledge.
But knowledge alone does not always lead to wise or effective action. Emotions like anger, pride, or love can overpower rational thinking. Often, habits and conditioning gain the upper hand. Ingrained behavioural patterns override new knowledge and we act out of habit, not reflection.
Stress also skews our judgment. For example, a doctor may know that smoking is harmful to health, but still smoke due to stress or addiction. We also have biases that can lead to poor decision-making; favouring information that supports what we already believe, and the conviction that we are more right or capable than we really are, skew our judgment.
Moreover, knowledge does not solve moral or ethical dilemmas. People may know what is right, but prioritise personal gain, loyalty, or short-term success.
