Farmer leader detained hours before his fast

The detention of farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal has sparked a fresh controversy as the move may unite the farmer unions in Punjab and Haryana, the epicentre of 2020-21 farmers' protests.
The Punjab police have taken away farmer leader Dallewal, the coordinator of Samyukta Kisan Morcha (non-political), a few hours before he was set to start his fast-unto-death protest at the Khanauri border in Punjab's Sangrur district, foiling his attempt to pressurise the Union government for the pending demands.
The surprise move of the Punjab police has evoked a sharp reaction from the farmer unions and leaders of Opposition parties in Haryana and Punjab. Thousands of farmers from Punjab and Haryana reached Khanauri border and slammed the Aam Aadmi Party-led Punjab government for playing into the hands of the Centre.
