Congress sees opening as regional parties weaken

In Uttar Pradesh, the Bahujan Samaj Party has been marginalised, though the Samajwadi Party continues to pose a challenge.Similarly, in Bihar, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) has been weakened by repeated electoral setbacks. The Assembly elections due in Uttar Pradesh next year may prove decisive for the Samajwadi Party’s future.
The rise of regional parties had earlier pushed the Congress out of power in states such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra, Odisha and West Bengal. However, the situation now appears to be changing. In Odisha, the BJP’s rise to power has weakened the Biju Janata Dal. Age is also catching up with BJD leader Naveen Patnaik.
