COLD SEASON, COMMON PAIN: PREVENTING EAR AND THROAT INFECTIONS
January 07, 2026
|The Daily Guardian
Winter brings relief from heat, but it also brings a sharp rise in ear pain and sore throat complaints.
Cold air, low humidity, seasonal infections, and weakened immunity make the ears and throat particularly vulnerable during this season. Many people experience recurring throat irritation, blocked ears, earaches, or infections every winter, often ignoring early symptoms until they worsen. Understanding why these problems increase in winter and learning practical preventive steps can significantly reduce discomfort and medical visits.
During winter, cold air causes the lining of the nose, throat, and Eustachian tube to dry out. This dryness reduces the body's natural defense against bacteria and viruses. People also spend more time indoors, increasing exposure to infections. Sudden temperature changes—moving from warm rooms to cold outdoor air—stress the respiratory system. Additionally, reduced sunlight can lower vitamin D levels, weakening immunity and making infections more frequent.
