A new political tremor is rippling through Uttar Pradesh as Samajwadi Party (SP) veteran Azam Khan's praise for Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati has revived speculation of shifting equations—both in Rampur and beyond.

A day after Mayawati publicly denied meeting "any senior leader" from another party, Khan called her "a leader of a big public group" and reminisced about his "old association" with BSP founder Kanshi Ram. The remarks come just two days after SP chief Akhilesh Yadav met Khan privately at his Rampur residence a meeting from which sitting Rampur MP Mohibullah Nadvi was deliberately excluded at Khan's insistence.
Khan, speaking to ANI, expressed regret over Mayawati's comments and extended respect towards her. "She deserves every bit of respect, whether she is in power or not. If she has received any wrong information about me, I am sorry for that. I've known her elders too. My relationship with her and Kanshi Ram has always been one of mutual respect. He would visit me at 4 a.m. for conversations after my morning namaaz," Khan said.
