Any rose that is deeply perfumed, whether it is red, pink, yellow or any other colour, is irresistibly romantic and most appropriate for this month of romance.

Perfumed roses can be found among all varieties, from the nostalgic Antico roses and elegant hybrid teas to the floriferous floribundas and fairytale roses.

When rose breeders look for the perfect rose, perfume, disease resistance, flowering ability and vigour are the main criteria.

Make the most of fragrant roses by placing or planting them where they can be most easily appreciated, in a pot on the patio, alongside a pathway or towards the front of a bed.

To bring the perfume into the house, you just need one or two fragrant roses in a vase among other roses or flowers.

My pick of five different but highly fragrant roses shows just how diverse such perfumed roses can be.
