Gimmie Rules was priced up early favourite to win the Grade 1 Hollywoodbets Cape Guineas but drifted after a ton of support for Mike and Mathew de Kock-trained Jan Van Goyen.
Jan Van Goyen went on to win the race and Gimmie Rules was far from disgraced in fourth, beaten just 3.35 lengths, but the defeat scuppered any plans to run the son of Gimmethegreenlight in the Grade 1 L'Ormarins King's Plate on 10 January.
He will, however, be contesting Race 7 at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Sunday, a Class 2 Handicap over 1500m, where all nine entries boast three-figure merit ratings, with the average being 107.
Dean Kannemeyer's charge looks the one to beat as this three-year-old colt will be carrying just 54kg.
"I entered him in the King's Plate," said Kannemeyer, "and if he was good enough to win the Guineas, he would have gone into the race, maybe.
