Complexities when structuring an investment portfolio
March 11, 2025
|The Citizen
When structuring an investment portfolio, we typically use various vehicles over time as our financial position increases in complexity and value.
The vehicles hold different benefits and play different roles within a planning structure.
The "perfect" portfolio comprises various vehicles over time.
There are sometimes less ideal outcomes to be aware of and plan for. These include:
Accessibility; Ownership; Growth within the vehicle; Taxation; and What happens at death - essentially estate planning.
Ownership structures A trust and a company structure can play an invaluable role in planning a portfolio - if structured for the right reasons and needs within the bigger picture.
This could be due to reasons such as physical company needs and partnerships, minor children, protecting a family and the continuity of assets, a special trust - perhaps in the case of a disabled child.
These ownership structures need to be navigated well and only structured with proper advice from a tax advisor/auditor and your wealth advisor.
A trust and a company are not always required/relevant.
