Commissioner 'knew the danger' of his allegations

KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi is more than capable of defending himself, says parliament's police portfolio committee chair Ian Cameron.

Mkhwanazi was aware of the dangers that would likely follow his comments, he said, adding: "I think Mkhwanazi is likely aware of any potential risk regarding what happened on Sunday."

Mkhwanazi during a media briefing accused senior police leadership, including Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu, of interfering in investigations into politically motivated killings.

Speaking at a peace and security cluster committee meeting in parliament yesterday, Cameron said he had not reached out to the minister after the allegations.
