Tower block demolition plan to be scrutinised

A DECISION to knock down a tower block and relocate its elderly residents is set to be scrutinised by a council committee following a valid call-in request.

South Tyneside Council's Labour cabinet recently agreed on the future of Durham Court, Hebburn’s last remaining residential high-rise building.

The 18-storey block, built in 1974 for those over 55, houses 111 flats, with 70 currently occupied, and “96 occupants reside in the building”, most of whom are over 65.

Cabinet members unanimously voted for the demolition of Durham Court and the rehousing of its residents.

They stated that this option was recommended after considering a “range of complex factors, including financial and what is in the best interests of the tenants.”
