Support is what the Toon Army is all about, says Howe

NEWCASTLE United take on Tottenham Hotspur on the back of goalkeeping storms for both clubs over the last week - as Eddie Howe warned frustrated fans not to step out of line with abuse.

Howe has issued a staunch defence of Nick Pope after the goalkeeper came in for intense and stinging criticism after his blunder in Marseille in last week's Champions League defeat.

The Newcastle head coach was spared the decision of axing Pope at Everton after the England international was injured in training on Friday.

With Aaron Ramsdale set to start against Spurs tonight, the visitors go into the game on the back of a issues of their own after goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario was subjected to abuse for an error against Fulham in the 2-1 loss on Saturday night.

When asked about the treatment of players who make mistakes, Howe said: "While the game's going on and the players are playing the only think I ask from the Newcastle supporters is they encourage and support the players because it's a very tough environment at the best of times - let alone when you're getting criticised by your own.
