'I think it would spread quickly here'
EARLIER this month, there was an outbreak of meningococcal disease in Kent, with preventative antibiotics being given out after the death of two students.
With universities issuing guidance, it remains to be seen how this situation will develop. We took to the streets to find out how students in Newcastle are feeling about it.
"We did get an email saying that zero percent of the student population has meningitis, so that has calmed our worries a bit," says 20-year-old Connor England, studying Mathematics with Business at Newcastle University.
"We do have quite a lot of southern students as well, so if they had been home recently and went out - I know it was just St. Patrick's Day so everyone was out. That was quite a concern in my house," he continued.
