CHURCH LEADER CALLS FOR 'APPALLING' MEN'S LOOS TO BE CLOSED
A VEXED vicar has urged rail bosses to spend more than a few pennies upgrading “dark, dismal, and filthy” toilets at a historic North East railway station.
The Rev Mark Edwards MBE has called for major improvements at Newcastle Central Station, after being appalled by the condition of the men’s loos next to Platform 12.
The toilets date back to the 1890s and were reopened in 2021 following restoration works.
But Rev Edwards has called for them to be closed to the public again after a visit last week left him feeling “physically nauseated”.
In a letter to LNER managing director David Horne and Network Rail chief executive Sir Andrew Haines, he described the state of the Victorian toilets as “shocking and unhygienic”.
