APPROVAL has been granted to start preparatory work on the site of a £10bn datacentre in Northumberland ahead of construction getting under way.

Planning permission for the major development was granted earlier this year, with building work on the first of the datacentre “campus” set to begin in early 2026.
The project by US-based firm QTS represents one of the largest inward investments in the UK, and will see the creation of a series of datacentres providing computing power for the likes of Cloud services and new Al technology.
Once completed, the campus will cover 540,000 square metres.
The latest milestone will see a site compound erected, vegetation cleared, repairs to fencing and various earthworks.
After a number of false dawns for the prominent site - most notably doomed plans by Britishvolt to build an electric vehicle battery plant - Northumberland County Council leader Glen Sanderson believed it was an important moment.
