POLICE have thanked fans after the first Wear-Tyne derby in the Premier League since 2016 passed "largely without incident".

There was an increased police presence ahead of the derby at the Stadium of Light on Sunday

One person was arrested on suspicion of disorderly conduct, but Northumbria Police said that the overwhelming majority of fans behaved "respectfully and appropriately".

There was a much larger police presence around the Stadium of Light than for a regular match, and cordons were in place to facilitate the arrival and departure of fans, with many away supporters travelling to the Stadium of Light on the Metro.
