Charity shop robber tried to stab manager
December 08, 2025
|The Chronicle
A robber who tried to stab the manager of a charity shop for veterans was bravely taken to the floor and disarmed.
Christopher Cook
Despicable Christopher Cook, who described himself as a “full-time burglar”, caused thousands of pounds of damage to the shop by breaking in through the roof before stealing from the till and a tombola bucket.
When the manager of the Veterans At Ease shop, on Shields Road, Byker, Newcastle, went to the shop at 8am on August 24 this year, he heard a rustling noise coming from upstairs as he opened up.
He went to investigate and saw stranger Cook in one of the rooms, Newcastle Crown Court heard.
Neil Pallister, prosecuting, said: “The defendant was trying to open a safe with a screwdriver which had been taken from a set in the same room.
The manager watched the defendant for a couple of seconds as he tried to take in who he was.

No escaping your fitter enemy
EVERY new show needs a great opening. Something to forcefully grab the viewer's attention and maintain that vice-like grip for the next hour or so. The producers of Handcuffed: Last Pair Standing must have been rubbing their hands with glee when they saw the rough cut of this first episode: a glimpse of the countryside, a nice burst of birdsong, sounds of a man and a woman laughing and then... two people naked in a shower. Goodness me, and it's only just past the watershed too.
