Arrest after man and child die in one-car collision

SUSPICION OF DANGEROUS DRIVING CITED
A MAN and a boy have died following a car crash in South Shields.
Shortly after 8.55pm on Saturday, Northumbria Police received a report of a one-vehicle collision on John Reid Road, near the New Mill Inn. For reasons yet to be established, a white Skoda Octavia came off the road.
John Reid Road remained closed in both directions yesterday as investigations got under way and officers carried out enquiries. Police cordoned off Brockley Avenue, an adjacent residential area.
Emergency services including Northumbria Police, North East Ambulance Service, Great North Air Ambulance and Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene where a man in his 40s and a secondary-school aged boy were found to have sustained serious injuries. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
