Increase in ketamine admissions at clinic

'Four-fold increase' over drug in the past six months

Increase in ketamine admissions at clinic

IN A TRANQUIL part of Cheshire, dealing with the aftermath of severe addictions is a daily occurrence.

The doors here have seen hundreds who have grappled with substances like cocaine and alcohol.

These are individuals who have sought solace in various substances to cope with life, only to find their lives spiralling out of control.

However, over recent months, the team at Delamere addiction rehabilitation clinic in Cuddington have observed a noticeable increase in admissions for a drug they describe as 'insidious, cunning, baffling and powerful, despite its street reputation for being 'safe'.

Ketamine, a dissociative anaesthetic sold as a grainy white or light brown powder, has hallucinogenic effects and can induce feelings of relaxation and disassociation.

Currently categorised as Class B, the drug's relatively low cost and fleeting effects have resulted in a popularity surge among young people.

But there's a darker side to this party drug that's becoming apparent among long-term and frequent users.

Severe 'K cramps', debilitating bladder problems and an increase in social isolation are all common side effects in those who have been regular users of the drug for years - many of whom clinicians say initially considered it to be 'safe'.

Delamere has seen ketamine-related admissions increase four-fold over the past six months.

Clients - or, as Delamere prefer to call them, 'guests' - with ketamine as their primary substance now account for 15 to 20 per cent of the centre's 23 spaces, according to CEO and founder Martin Preston.

He called the current situation a 'crisis'.
