Bakery to cut up to 250 jobs due to 'serious challenges'

A CHESHIRE bakery whose history stretches back 138 years has announced plans to axe up to 250 jobs amid 'unprecedented challenges in the last 24 months'.

The family-run Roberts Bakery in Northwich described the decision as 'the hardest' in its long history.

It says it has been forced to restructure operations at the Rudheath site following significant challenges in the bread market and ongoing economic pressures.

Since the devastating fire at the bread plant in June 2023 where two thirds of the bread production capacity was lost for over a year Roberts has worked extensively to rebuild production.

However, despite its best efforts, bread volumes have not bounced back as anticipated with many customers having secured alternative supply contracts during the recovery period.
