Agama's SEC: Fast Reforms, Lingering Risks
The BusinessNG
|The Business NG
Dr. Emomotimi Agama's appointment as Director General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in April 2024 sparked cautious optimism across Nigeria's capital market.
A seasoned insider and former Managing Director of the Nigerian Capital Market Institute, Agama was widely seen as a technocrat with the credibility and experience to lead the Commission into a new era. Now, just over a year into his leadership, his tenure is drawing both applause for bold reforms and scrutiny over unresolved structural flaws.
Agama's leadership team, confirmed by the Senate in June 2024, includes key market professionals: Bola Ajomale (Executive Commissioner, Operations), Franca Chuwuogor (Legal and Enforcement), and Samiya Hassan (Corporate Services). The SEC Board, chaired by Mairiga Katuka, also features veteran stockbrokers like Lekan Bello and Kasimu Kurfi, consolidating the market-facing tilt of Agama's administration.
